Indonesia, Lombok, Mount Tampa, stacked villas

Villa Boë, designed by Alexis Dornier, is nestled on a steep hillside in a developing area on the Indonesian island of Lombok. Its location, one of the highest points on the site, necessitated a vertical approach to planning and shaping, allowing the house to blend into the topography while retaining a strong sense of architecture. The project unfolds as a series of stacked volumes, following the contours of the hillside. The entrance and garage are located at the lower level, from which shared living areas ascend. Higher up, two separate wings extend, each accommodating a family. At the very top, a circular terrace provides a dedicated area for yoga and meditation, framing panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding mountains.

The plan layout is organized around concentric circles and radial divisions. This geometry determines the orientation of each roof and defines the relative positioning of the volumes. Rather than being simply stacked, the villas are terraced extensions of the hillside, their elevations flowing upward to form a continuous topography. The German architect, whose studios are located in Berlin and Bali, aimed for the building to create a harmonious response to the vast coastal terrain. The building's composed stance is intended to blend modestly into the hillside. The swimming pool exemplifies this approach, integrated into the living space rather than existing in isolation, and complementing the landscape through stepped levels and gradual transitions.

The villa utilizes a palette of understated materials that respond to the local climate. Teak lines the ceilings and soffits, off-white walls create a light and airy interior, and white Palimana stone sets the tone for the floors. These elements strike a balance between durability, simplicity, and a connection to the site.

Some rooflines hint at the influence of mid-century icons like John Lautner, whose work emphasized shaping the building's exterior and integrating it into its site. In Lombok, the rooftops serve as a framework for the surrounding landscape. In this way, the house becomes more than a residence; it serves as a belvedere, designed to celebrate the distant horizon.
